Don’t call me Porty

Call me Bennett Wade Portnoy! (or Ben for short).

Introducing our baby boy! And check out that package!

It's a boy! Is it ever...check out that turtle! Introducing Bennett Wade Portnoy

Yes, the neck and neck poll on gender now has a victor. BOY! I have to say, Ryan and I sat there completely shocked. I could not absorb it. I was so sure it was a girl and you all know I was leaning that way and Ryan really wanted a girl and was 100% sure we were having a girl…but nope….that my friends is a penis if I ever saw one!

The ultrasound was kinda frustrating because Bennett did not want to cooperate at all, a little shy about his face and bits and pieces…so we never really got to see his face. SAD. We go back in four weeks for face shots and more spine shots, they couldn’t see his whole spine. So I will be happy to see my little boy again and, of course, four weeks is huge in baby world, so he will have more chub and be bigger and easier to see. I am dying to see if he has the same Charlie Brown profile Chloe did with the pug nose.

I did have a short mini cry in the waiting room to release my shock. I’m human people! I am THRILLED for my extremely healthy little boy, what more could I ask for. All his organs are tip top, praise Jesus. I think a feeling of inadequacy swept over me as I just feel like I “get” girls, I am head over heels in love with Chloe and I just pictured myself with a house full of estrogen.

Now I know every mom out there with a little boy wants to tell me how great boys are…and they are….I just don’t shift gears that fast in my heart and head. I think I have gone from 5th to 4th gear…but I haven’t down shifted to 1st yet. Give me a day and I will be decorating his room in my head and finding cool toys and games for boys. Ryan can shift gears in a second and is so excited to have his third baseman. No pressure, right? YOU WILL BE AN ATHELETE AND YOU WILL LOVE BOSTON BENNETT!

We went out to Old Navy so I could revive my soul with a cute boy outfit. Shopping for boys? This is new!
This is Bennett’s first outfit, blanket and hat. Oh man..too cute!

Bennett's first outfit

So what’s with the name. Ryan and I bitterly fought about names for months. It came down to Anderson Wade (Anders) or Bennett Wade. I was pulling for Bennett. There is such a cool history. My great grandfather Bennett immigrated from Wales at the turn of the century. The trunk he brought over sits in my bedroom and on the side of the trunk he punched in the words, “Jesus Saves”. I love that there is a Christian heritage from way back. Bennett also means “Blessed” which is awesome. Wade is my dad and brother’s middle name and seeing as my bro decided not to use it, I wanted to carry that on. So there you have it. Cool heritage, cool meaning, family name. Bennett Wade. Very boy, very strong…I love it!

So here is what my belly looks like at one day shy of 20 weeks. I can’t believe I am half-way there!!!!!! So surreal!

Shirt on

19 weeks 6 days

Shirt up

19 weeks/6 days

9 lbs gained at the half-way point…yeah me!

One more picture for the road because I have calls and emails to make. If you don’t get Parent magazine, then you wouldn’t have seen the cover for September. I stopped dead when I looked at it because this little boy reminded me so much of Chloe. I said to Ryan, “If we had a boy, do you think he would look like this?” Ryan thought so. What do you think?

Could this be what Bennett looks like? Does this not look like Chloe?

I mean this is her this week.

She thinks it's hysterical go zoom around in this toy stroller

The eyes, the shape of the nose and mouth…I think it is pretty close. Wouldn’t that be wild? I love when siblings resemble each other…but who knows what we got cookin inside!

Alright kiddos, thanks for participating in the poll!

Cast your ballot!

How bout a big round of applause for Amanda! Oh my word, I never knew the moral dilemma behind antipasto! I have to confess, I am not really sure I know what antipasto is and looked it up on dictionary dot com. I like most of the ingredients so I would probably pile it on my plate and pick out the veggies I am not fond of. Thanks for lending Amanda some comment love. She was very afraid she would be the kiss of death on my website and I assured her that I had wonderful, kind readers who would welcome her with open arms. Seriously, you must make her a daily read. She will make you laugh hard.

Moving on. It is sex week!!! Oh yeah! Not sex like you think you dirty pigs. It is Porty Sex Confirmation Week and now it is time to wager your bets or at least cast your ballots. I know the majority of you keep saying boy and for the life of me I don’t know why some people get premonitions one way and not the other. This pregnancy is similar to Chloe only I got more of the “sick” first trimester. The Chinese Gender Chart says “girl” and they swore Chloe was a boy. So go figure on that one. All the wives tales predict me having a girl. Heartbeat was 160bpm last month. But all that means nothing in the end….let’s be honest.

Sooooo…go with your gut and vote away.

What is “Porty’s” Gender?

  • Girl - “wee-wee” (50%, 61 Votes)
  • Boy - “pee-pee” (50%, 60 Votes)

Total Voters: 121

Bump patrol

It seems impossible that I could be showing this early. With Chloe, I didn’t show until 14-15 weeks. Here I am at 11.5 weeks.

Let’s see if my rat-ta-tats hold up this time around. OH youthful whims…at least they can be covered.

11.5 weeks...and there is<br />
a bump already!

11.5 weeks...and there is a bump already!

Can’t really tell too much from the front.

11.5 weeks...and there is a bump already!

And with clothes on. Looks like a pot-belly. Can’t really tell from the front. notice how I strategically do not show my whole body….can we say APPLE BOTTOM…HOLLA!

11.5 weeks...and there is a bump already!

See, having a nice camera does not make you a good photographer. My hand was shaking so bad trying to hold my camera out far enough so the lens could focus. I could have waited for Ryan, but what fun is that? It is really cool to be showing so early but then again, HOLY CRAP…what am I going to look like at 8 months, 9 months….my poor 12 inch torso, what shape will you be in the end?

The really cool part is that I have felt the baby kick for the last 3 days. I thought there is NO way this early I am feeling the baby, but I checked with my Ivillage expectancy group and several second time moms have felt movement. So although I am crazy and full of gas…this was not the cause.

Now I am going to invite you into my marriage. Ryan and I will avidly admit we aren’t super romantic. We blame it on our finances because seriously, if Ryan showed up with flowers I would be so happy for about 30 seconds and then I would freak out that he spent $30.00 of grocery money. It isn’t like it isn’t in us and there are lots of little things you can do without money, but on the whole, this isn’t our strongest area. Now I have to say Ryan is the most thoughtful guy I have ever met! He is so in tune on how to help me and is never bothered to do anything for me, ever. It is wonderful, I love this about him.

What we do have is junior high humor! It is sad, you would think the older I get the less appealing middle school humor would be…but no, no, you can’t take the 7th grader out of the 31 year old. One of my favorite things we do is email flirt and write messages on the bathroom mirror (and pictures) We will have to stop the drawings when Chloe gets a little older (wink wink).

Anyway, I was looking through some emails and IM’s that we sent back and forth recently and got giggling, so I thought I would share a few.

From Kelly:

I loved the seriously huge log I was greeted with this morning. Some husbands buy flowers or leave notes and others leave gifts in the toilet. How can one girl be so lucky…swoon? I also enjoyed the smell after I flushed and broke that mother into 500,000,000 pieces….mmmmmmm. Not hard to keep down your cereal after that.

Well I am off to wash my skanky hair, I just chopped a whole bunch more off, I think I will be bald soon. I will think of an equally sweet gift I can leave you today. Maybe puke on your pillow or pee in your shoes…I don’t know, I am just spit balling…we’ll see where the spirit leads.

LOVING YOU!!!! You silly man!

Kel

(Now I told Ryan I would have a disclaimer on this that he only does this when he has the shower going and doesn’t want the water turning cold before he jumps in. He just forgets sometimes to take care of business after the shower…lucky me!)

This is from an email to my friend Amanda “Kickyboots” Brown.

Last night I was teasing Ryan and told him to follow me into the back room and I pointed to my butt and said, “follow the bouncing ball” and we had a major discussion on what sound my butt cheeks make when I walk, if butt cheeks could make a sound. I think we settled on Gah-gong, gah-gong, gah-gong. It is the sound of a brief lift of the cheek and a slamming down into the thigh. Nice huh…that’s what we do for fun.

Iming from separate rooms:

Ryan: your breath smell like poopoo sticks sometimes.

me: I know, and you can tell me and I will brush my teeth
just like you can. It is called a courtesy brush…you should try it.

here is another IM

Ryan: hey sex
what’s poppin’?

5:39 PM me: my name is not sex

5:40 PM Ryan: I know, it’s your middle name!

That’s all I got for now doing a quick search in the archives. I don’t know, maybe we are romantic it is just a “different” kinda romance than is traditionally taught. Hey, it works for us!

No witty title

I got nothing, nada, zilch. I can’t think of one stinking good title. I bet some of you thought I was milking this delurking thing for all it was worth. I promise you I was not! I only blog 2-3 times a week anyway and by Saturday I thought…ummmm…”Kelly, you need to write a new post because that one is really dated”…BUT then I was tired, busy and I just didn’t care and I also thought to myself, “Self, you have your first ultrasound Monday. Won’t your throngs of readers (hello newbie commenter’s, I love you!) want to see Porty’s first picture?” So yes, wasn’t it worth the wait?

Here is little Porty in all his/her glory. I was blown away by the detail and the movement in this baby!!! I could have watched all afternoon. Wow, legs and arms all over the place, not nubs, full arms, feet, legs and hands. it was AWESOME! Of course from the angle of this picture it looks like a baby turtle.

"Porty"s first picture

Don’t you love my scanning skills? I don’t have a clue in the world how to use a scanner…and…cough, cough, we don’t have ours back from somebody who borrowed it many moons ago, cough, cough. So I used my noggin and thought….aha…take a picture of a picture! Can we say COLLEGE DEGREE!

I know you second time moms probably had the same thought, especially if yours are close together, deja vu! I walked into Dr. Baker’s office (we all know how much I LOVE my doctor…he is the best!) and instantly I was transported back to last year at this time. He walked in and said, “Back so soon? Isn’t your first less than a year?” I told him that I wanted to see him so bad that I worked an unexpected pregnancy in to speed up the process. Anyway, not only did I have the pleasure of a pap smear and the finger to the uterus check, but I also got a vaginal ultrasound, not a tummy one. VIOLATED! My mom and Ryan were cutting up with Dr. Baker the whole time. You ever laugh with a metal duck bill in your most sensitive of spots? I don’t recommend it. Anywho. The baby is perfect, the heartbeat strong, and I have to say it…..I am SO EXCITED! It is just wonderful, what fears, anxieties, and grief I had a few weeks ago were completely lifted and joy and excitement came flooding in.

We kept joking that I wasn’t really preganant and that really wasn’t my baby on the screen, they just have videos they pop in of babies to trick you…but seriously, I am thrilled! I came home and showed Chloe her new sibling and I have been taking her hand and patting my belly saying, “baby” over and over. “We’re really doing it Har!” (Dumb and Dumber for you scratching your heads.)

So although I really had no clue in the world when I had had my last period, my guesstimate was almost 100%. I thought I was 10 wks, 2 days and Porty measured 10 weeks, 4 days. Dr. Baker is sticking with my due date of May 4th!!!! 18 months to the day of Chloe’s birthday. Can you freaking believe it? I was telling my mom when I was driving home how quickly life changes. June 2008 will mark four years since Ryan and I started dating. Who knew four years later I would have two kids by then! Remember that you singles who feel like it will never happen. Your whole life can change in an instant.

I was asked what I thought about The Office so far. I have to say, I am a little disappointed. It isn’t like I haven’t laughed, but nothing like I normally do. They screwed with a lot of my favorite chemistries. Like Jim and Dwight…they aren’t fighting at all, I love Dwight and Angella’s “secret” romance and now it is over and I am really ticked we didn’t get the pleasure of seeing how Jim and Pam got together…it is magically 2 months later, not even a teensy weensy flashback? Come on! And Ryan, he is a total dill now and I loved the way he used to interact with Michael. I know they are just setting up the season and I know it will get better but I give it a B- so far. Now Grey’s Anatomy on the other hand. Just when I thought it couldn’t possibly get any stupider…..It TOTALLY REDEEMED ITSELF! (That too is Dumb and Dumber…come on people) I have REALLY enjoyed Grey’s the last 2 weeks, so much better than last season. My other new fav is Pushing Daisies. Brilliant, different, funny, and sweet! I really enjoyed the season premiere.

Lastly, to close this mini novel. We said goodbye to a very dear person in our lives. Ryan’s brother, Sam, leaves today for Afghanistan for an 8 month tour. This is his third time back there. He loves it, he loves being a green beret, but we are all entrusting him into the Lord’s care while he is gone. He asked if we would take pictures of him and his girlfriend, Brittany, before they left. So we squeezed yet another photo shoot in this weekend. WE NEED A BREAK or at least hire some people to edit. So slammed right now. Truly it is our pleasure to shoot Sam, he is so ridiculously good to Ryan, Chloe and I. We love you Sammy! So enjoy the young love. I am sorry they are so ugly, you can bleach your eyeballs when you are done.
