Big fat baby

No not me, although I have taken whining to an all new level over the last few months.

I went in today for a regular OB appointment. Same song, same dance….pee in this cup, take your blood pressure, weigh you (gag…only 1.5 pounds in 3 weeks…yeah!)

Chatty chat chat with Dr. Baker. Love him! Tells me a funny story each visit. This one was about women who take phone calls in the middle of vaginal exams. Helloooooooo…..a man has a metal instrument or hand in your holy of holies and you are taking calls from your husband and realtor’s and tell the doctor to continue like normal. Geesh…..even too much for me!

Next up…measuring the fundus. How great is that word…FUNdus? Sounds so much dirtier than it is. Any of you scratching your head, the fundus is the measurement from the pubic bone to the top of the uterus. It is suppose to measure in centimeters the exact number of weeks you are carrying. Get it, got it, good.

Anyway, I am technically 30 weeks 4 days today…so I should measure between 30-31 cm. HOWEVER…..I measured 34 cm. Like 3 and a half weeks ahead….like almost a MONTH bigger.

Dr. Baker: “Hmmmmmm……weird.” ( remeasures, checks my file.)
“You are measuring really far ahead. Three weeks ago you measured 28 weeks.” ( do the math…..34 minus 28….6 weeks should have passed…..I know, you didn’t think you were going to have to use your brain for this)

MMMMMkay….what does that mean? Well basically, I come back in two weeks and if I am still measuring that far ahead then they are going to give me an ultrasound and see what is going on with him. Obviously, it wasn’t that I had this massive weight gain, it is all him….but I just don’t know what this all means in the long run. Chloe was completely average in weight and slightly tall at birth. I was an average baby, a little short. Ryan was a big baby, over 9 pounds and 23 inches long. Can we say almost two feet of baby!!!!! I will take long legs any day over a big noggin or broad shoulders.

Could this be us?

I mean kinda cool to think I could shave a whole month off of third trimester…hello…less weight, backaches, peeing incessantly.

BUTTTTTTTTTTTT

Does this mean a c-section could be in my future? I am really really not cool with that…at all. Plus the quicker Bennett gets here the quicker my life goes a bit wacky with have two little ones to care for. (biting fingernails nervously) For heavens sake, today is the last day of construction. Our bathroom will be finished TODAY!!!! We are on week 8 of all the construction and now we will finally have our house to ourselves but we have tons of cleaning and painting ahead of us. I would really really love to enjoy my house and time with Chloe before the next storm of change rolls in.

I don’t know. I don’t want to borrow trouble…I mean it could be nothing or it could be some difficult choices in a couple weeks. I know he isn’t going to shrink. So when I go back in two weeks and will be 33 weeks, I am just praying he still measures 34 weeks so there isn’t a big difference and things progress as normal. NORMAL…what a relative word.

So any mom’s out there have a similar situation? What happened? What were your choices? Encouragment?

So what do you think….is this a 30.4 week belly or 34 weeks?

30.4 week belly shot or is it 34 weeks????

30.4 week belly shot or is it 34 weeks????

30.4 week belly shot or is it 34 weeks????

and a blurry self-portrait. It is impossible to get a sharp shot standing on a chair with a heavy camera in one hand.

30.4 week belly shot or is it 34 weeks????

Who will Deanna pick?

First, holy CRAP to that 17-pound infant. Can you even imagine carrying that boy around in utero? Oy.

And I have no experience whatsoever, but to me you look right. Cute, fairly high, and it looks like you could still grow. I mean, we’re all different, right? (I’m almost 20 weeks and still wearing my old jeans. Not that I’m complaining about that. But I do kind of want that baby belly!)

Sounds like Bennett is taking after his dad!

  2. 2 Julie Nickerson Feb 26th, 2008 at 5:04 pm

I LOVE belly shots! How cute are you and Bennett!!!!

Wow, I can’t believe he is measuring that big! Maybe he just really took off in the last few weeks. I mean, Ryan is super tall so I think he is just taking after his daddy. I know it is hard not to worry, but I think he is just so healthy and just growing so fast because he wants to come out and play. Abel started measuring a week ahead around 30 weeks. Not really a big deal, but he did come 2 weeks early. :) Maybe Bennett will come just a little early…not too early…but maybe 38 weeks. Doesn’t that sound good?

I won’t know what to do with myself if the next baby goes to 40 weeks. I only had to go 2 weeks into my 9th month. I didn’t think being 9 months pregnant could get any worse….

    I smell a poop…gotta go.

PS-SOOOOOOOOOOOOO proud of you for only gaining 1.5lbs. Your rock!

  3. 3 Lauren Feb 26th, 2008 at 5:17 pm

This is Erin’s sister, Lauren. I am one of those people you hate who read your blog and NEVER comment. Don’t feel bad, I’ve never commented on my sister’s either…. Don’t worry at all about measuring big!! I measured 3-4 weeks ahead through out most of my pregnancy and the doctor was always talking about how I could have this ginormous baby. They did ultrasound after ultrasound to check his size (I did have gestational diabetes too, though) and my doc was talking about C-section at every visit. 3 weeks before my due date the ultrasound said he was 7 lb 13 oz… by his due date he should have been at least 9 pounds or more!! I was so scared. He came out weighing 7 lb 2 oz. He was a tiny little thing. I did have to have a c section though just because his poor head was stuck in my bones but it had nothing to do with him being huge or anything. I say that to say this… Don’t worry! Doctors don’t know crap about baby size! I’m sure Bennett’s just right in there! You look great!!

first, pictures, belly, gorgeous. love that color shirt, too, just a random side note.

second, ok this may be the non-mom in me, but what’s wrong with C-sections? I mean maybe it’s a personal thing, you not wanting one, but I do hear that from time to time - moms being divided on getting one or not. If it were me I think that’s what I’d PREFER - but I have my own reasons. maybe you’re one of those non-epideral mid-wife women, which is totally cool, but is that the reason for the non-c-section-wanting? help a non-mom out.
i’ve said non a lot in this post. my bad. or, non-good.

  5. 5 Jamie Feb 26th, 2008 at 5:45 pm

You look awesome!!! I love belly pics. You are looking a little more toward the 34 week end. There I said it. You don’t really “know” me in real life so you can blog smack me. It’s OK!

I’ve had two c-sections (first one was an emergency and was very hellish…second one was scheduled and was the WAY TO GO after the hell I went through the first time.) Honestly if you “have” to have one it’s better to know ahead of time. I had a great experience the second time and was up and tinkering in the room right away, had no problems breastfeeding, etc.

I could write a book on the differences in both experiences but I won’t here! ;)

  6. 6 joy Feb 26th, 2008 at 6:11 pm

just wait and see. Maybe things will even out next check up. Trust Baker.. He’s never steered you wrong I love your pictures you look absolutely beautiful pregnant. love your belly.

  7. 7 missie Feb 26th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Ok, first of all you are SO STINKIN’ CUTE! Belly and ALL! Sheesh am I jealous! I am SO NOT a “cute” pregnany lady. You SO ARE!

Ok… had three pregnancies… ALL three measured farther along (right about three weeks ahead) than I was… ALL three times the doc said they would be SO BIG. 7 pounds 11 ounces; 7 pounds 5 ounces; 8 pounds 5 ounces. No where near “BIG.” Really? I chalk it up to the fact that the distance between my pelvic bone and my ribs is ALREADY tiny - I have a very short midsection that the baby doesn’t “sit” quite the same as someone with a normal amount of space there. Does that even make sense?!?!? :) So, my two cents worth is this: Little Bennett knows EXACTLY when to be born… and he will be born then. In whatever means necessary. Don’t stress. :)

  8. 8 Kristin Feb 26th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

So cute, love the belly pics.

Here’s my story. I measured small at 36 weeks, was measuring at 33 or 34, they did an ultrasound and the baby was already 6 lbs. 14 oz. The ultrasound technician kind of laughed when I asked if that was too small! And he was born at 37 weeks, 5 days and weighed in at 7 lbs. 14 oz.

All that to say, the measurement is more of a guesstimate, is what they told me. It could be different people measuring, it could be the same person measuring differently. No big deal.

I agree with everyone else, Bennett knows or actually, the Lord knows when the perfect time for Bennett to come is, and that is when he will. And, after he is born healthy and perfect, if it ends up as a c-section, that won’t be the worst thing in the world. Maybe not your ideal, but a healthy baby and mom is the most important part. And my disclaimer is that I can say that because I haven’t had a c-section and that is what I tell myself in case I ever end up needing one!

    Your a beautiful pregnant mama!

  9. 9 Natalie Feb 26th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

i have no clue. the other ladies left great comments that should help you out, i just know if i were you i would be getting super excited thinking the baby might be coming early. try to not get your hopes up too much. but you look AWESOME. :)

  10. 10 Leiah Feb 26th, 2008 at 10:31 pm

I measured big by a few weeks and they too kept telling me she was going to be over 8 pounds. I kept asking “how much over?”! Well, the little missy had to come two weeks early due to my rising blood pressure and she only weighed 6 lbs. 9 oz.! They don’t always get it right. I’m sure Bennett is just fine. Love the belly shots and you look beautiful!

  11. 11 Holli Feb 26th, 2008 at 10:37 pm

That is definitely a 30 week belly, I was way bigger than that at 34 weeks, and is it just me or have you lost weight everywhere else? no, really, I’m serious! you look great, Kel, just beautiful! Weird though about the measurement changing so drastically from your last appt. I’m glad you’ll go back in two weeks instead of a month. I’m measuring one week ahead, so this baby could come any minute! I’m with you though on hoping that Mr. Bennett isn’t tooo early…you need some time to relax in your new RENO’D bathroom and get some Chloe love that I know you are craving. Praying that a c-section is NOT in your future. Thanks for the belly shots!!!!

  12. 12 Candace Feb 26th, 2008 at 10:51 pm

    Yay, the pterodactyl is back!!

I have no opinion on the big baby issue, except that it could just be a fluke. They go through growth spurts so quickly, maybe he hit his early. And even so, a lot of all the “measuring” they do isn’t an exact, so I wouldn’t think twice about until the next time you go and it’s still an issue. You know I love me some Dr. Baker too and take his word for truth any day, but measuring the fundus is still a guesstimate that is based on averages, but that doesn’t mean your measurment is abnormal.

  13. 13 ShannonW Feb 26th, 2008 at 11:04 pm

You’re so cute! Love the belly pic. It sounds like Bennett is growing great and will probably take after daddy on the height. My theory…is that maybe it was the way he was laying in your belly. Could he have been moving around and maybe turned a certain way that made you measure big? Just pray that if he is big that he’ll get into head down position before he runs out of room. I had a c-section because of a breech baby. Basically, I was so small that he ran out of room to turn. Just rest easy and wait for the ultrasound, if you have to have one.

  14. 14 Heather H Feb 27th, 2008 at 8:13 am

You DO look amazing. I am really skeptical of due dates in general - esp. in your case when you just don’t know when this all began…

Also - Candace makes a good point…this whole baby thing isn’t like math (2 plus 2 equals 4), it’s more subjective.

    Try to relax?

And I pray you get some down-time with Chloe in your awesome reno’d home before the baby comes…

    love you!

  15. 15 christina Feb 27th, 2008 at 10:41 am

Well I too will agree with some of the other ladies and say that it is just a guesstimate, just like an ultrasound can be off /- 2 lbs so can the measurement.

As far as your belly goes you can’t tell by it either. Some had big giant belly’s and deliver peanut babies. So too can a small belly deliver a giant baby.

Your belly is perfect, ohh and the other thing that may effect it is your small torso so the uterus could be expanding more so than normal to accomodate, plus it’s a second pregnancy and well things aren’t as “tight” as they used to be. Your belly is more easily stretched…and if he’s a long one well then he needs more room too.

So ummm, theres your book on all the possiblities!

And I totally agree on the c-section front, they scare me but also because I am one of those “non-epideral mid-wife women”! LOL! and wouldn’t want it any other way~!!!

  16. 16 chrissy Feb 27th, 2008 at 11:12 am

i have no real thoughts here but u do LOOK further. you have BEEN saying that all along! so, i don’t know. but, i will say this……per chance you do have to have that c-section, there are positives. no pushing. praise JESUS. you can just chill and recover! my mom did it twice and she was fine. i mean, there’s always pros and cons but….hey….who knows. just chill and wait. we’ll see. perhaps we’ll meet bennie ben a little early! :)

  17. 17 allison Feb 27th, 2008 at 11:56 am

i love how they “nicknamed” the 17 pounder, “giant baby.”

    uh…that ain’t no nickname, people.

    that’s a SEVERE understatement!!!!

    holy crap.

  18. 18 joey joe joe Feb 27th, 2008 at 5:18 pm

kind of like a holy crap indeed…

  19. 19 Erin Feb 27th, 2008 at 6:59 pm

Oh Kelly! I feel ya, girl! I had a very similar experience with Caroline. I was measuring way beyond where I should have been starting near the end of the second trimester. I think that my gestational diabetes played a role in this. Unfortunately, my doctor was very clear that a c-section would be the best idea. Caroline came two and a half weeks early by c-section and she was 8lbs 6oz and 21 inches. So, she was huge for being so early!
In the beginning I was terrified at the thought of a c-section, but it wasn’t so bad. I really wanted to have the experience of giving birth naturally, but things didn’t work out that way for us. The recovery for me was pretty easy, I was pretty much back to normal after a week or so.
Anyway… I hope this helps. If you have anymore questions, please let me know. :-) Good luck!

  20. 20 Eileen Feb 28th, 2008 at 8:04 am

First off, that big baby is so scary - Jack didn’t look that big ever - even at 6 months! Of course, Patrick is a long, skinny stringbean like Ryan. In highschool, they called him “The 6′10″-110 Wonder”. He’s really 6′6″, but you get the idea. Jack’s built like his daddy….lucky kid.

Secondly, you look SO great! How in the heck do you not have any stretch marks?? I’m covered, and as such, could never post a bare-belly shot online without looking like I have a bad case of Cat Scratch Fever. I’m sure BW is right on time and normal sized, lots of people measure ahead.

  21. 21 Shari Feb 28th, 2008 at 9:37 am

First time commenter (by the way! lol)

I had the opposite experience with both of my pregnancies. I spent week after week listening to my doc tell me that I could not possibly be as far along as I thought. That my belly was too small, the baby was too small. I had a sono every 6 weeks with each pregnancy, all of which “showed” the baby was WAY too small…

I gave birth (according to the doc’s) 5 weeks early, and 3 weeks early, to two girls: 7lb 10oz and 7lb 12oz respectively.
    Hmmmmm, what a conundrum right?

So my tidbit, and brace yourself…
Doctors are just really big guessers!!!
    I know, I know, you’re shocked aren’t you? :)

  22. 22 Natalie Feb 28th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Good Job Girl- Only 1.5 pounds. I just had my 27 week check up and I gained (gulp) 10 pounds!!! (Dun Dun Dun). 17 pounds all together but 10 pounds in one month! No more french fries for me :)

  23. 23 meridyth Feb 28th, 2008 at 6:36 pm

how on this earth does a woman have the strength to carry a 17lb baby in utero??? that is insane. we 7lb baby-carriers were about to die by week 32! caleb was 17lbs by 5 months and i had a hard time carrying him around in my arms!

i think you look so great. it’s tough being so prego with chloe as active as she is, moving, photo business, construction… shall i go on? no? ok… you are amazing! maybe you’re measuring big just because of the way he is laying in there. he looks like he’s just poking out a little farther, like he has your booty and it’s sticking out at your belly button while his ryan-legs are pointing toward your back. that’s some extra length in a couple ways. (i say that with love…) can’t wait to hear what news the next appt brings!

  24. 24 Rachel Feb 29th, 2008 at 1:53 am

Kell…That my friend is exactly what has happened to me with both of my girls…But with my second, miss Rylee..Yeah..Jumped 6 weeks in 2 weeks if that makes sense.., My doctor noticed before he even measured. For me she just kept getting bigger at the same rate. I had her at 37 weeks and she weighed in at 8lbs 15.5 oz. She would have killed me at 40 weeks! I had a c section, but this is only because this is the only way I can have my babies…

Good luck doll! You will be fine. you know you love you some chubby babies!!

  25. 25 Heather Feb 29th, 2008 at 10:49 am

    Hey Kelly,

First of all, I want to say thank you! lol…. after the 17 lb. link I know am about 99.9% sure I won’t be carrying any more little “Glerum’s” in my belly! Here’s why…. I have diabetes ALL the time, none of this gestational stuff for me. Anyhoo, my daughter was 7 lbs even. I was induced at 39 weeks. My first son, was a scheduled c-setion b/c I measured early and all of the sonograms confirmed an big baby. So, I went in at 38 weeks. He was indeed a big baby, weighing in at 10 lbs 15 oz. Measuring 21 1/2 inches long. However, he wasn’t technically ready. His lungs were not completely developed. So, he spent 10 days in NICU. We faced one problem after the other while he was in there. Anyhoo…. I switched Dr’s with my 3rd pregnancy and we did our best to manage the diabetes better. My doctor continued to say that we’d have a larger baby, but he didn’t think he would be as big as my second child. So…. we wait for the 39 week, and again I measured big… we’re talking about 42 weeks or something like that….. and I went in for the scheduled cesarean. This is where it gets a little funny. As the doctor was about to deliver the baby, I asked him what’s the largest baby he’s ever delivered? The answer… 11 pounds. He begins to laugh… uhhh, yes Doctor? As he is attempting to control his own laughter, he says… “Heather, this is one huge baby, I think this one beats that last record. This has got to be the biggest baby I’ve ever delivered.” WHAT??? Indeed, he was huge. 12 pounds 1 ounce and 23 inches long to be exact. However, he was a healthy newborn. He was born on Friday, we came home on Sunday and were back at church on Wednesday night. That poor third child gets no special treatment you know, lol. Anyways, I say all of this to just proved that sometimes the doctors are right on, and other times they are just plain wrong. God knows though… and all things are in His hands. I’ll be praying that no matter what happens Bennett will be completely ready when he is born. Big baby or not, nothing is worse than spending time in the NICU. In my experiences I’d rather have 12 pound healthy babies than smaller ones that just aren’t quite ready. God Bless you these next few weeks!! I can’t wait to read your blog after he is born and your family dynamics completely change. I’m also looking forward to adorable sibling pictures. Happy Weekend!

    ~Heather

  26. 26 Nadine Feb 29th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

You look gorgeous! I say 32 weeks ;)

I am still in shock after seeing that 17 pound baby.

  27. 27 fidget Feb 29th, 2008 at 12:51 pm

all my babies have been big and this one is on track to be a giant also. All my kids have been vaginal births. It’s amazing how much baby can squeeze through your wahoo.

Let’s not worry and if they mention the big c, I would suggest you mention a trial of labor to see how well he and you handle it. a C should always be a last resort, especially these days with things like MRSA hanging around hospitals.

  28. 28 Melany Mar 1st, 2008 at 2:07 pm

I agree that you look awesome :) and yeah..did you loose weight everywhere else?
Here in South Africa they don’t even do that test. BUT we get ultrasounds every time lol So I would not have a clue if it’s a problem or not.
Having had 3 c-sections (and this is SSOO way ahead of the time I wouldn’t worry just yet) it really isn’t an issue. I was up and walking the same day

  29. 29 Dikola Mar 1st, 2008 at 10:49 pm

You shouldn’t have put that MSNBC site. I think Haylie weighed 17 pounds when she was 2. For crying out loud! That mom must have been SUMO! You, on the other hand, look FABULOUS! Don’t sweat it if you need a C-section. I wouldn’t fight it if the baby is really large. Hayley (my sister) tried so hard (he he) to deliver vaginally and ended up with the emergency c-section that didn’t go well. Her doctor told her if she would have just had the c-section in first place, she would have been fine. ??? I’m narrowing down times on a visit. Early, early July…maybe the 2 through 5ish. ?

  30. 30 Kelly Mar 3rd, 2008 at 9:27 am

Thank you all sooo much for the advice and stories. It has really helped me to relax. I know it isn’t an exact science, it just took me off guard. We shall wait and see and pray for God’s wisdom and discernment.

  31. 31 Myst Mar 8th, 2008 at 5:44 am

    You look terrific!

The photo of you front on, you wouldn’t even know you were pregnant at first glance!
    Side on, yeah of course!

    How lovely!

Pregnancy and babies feel like a whole other world to me now,
    and I’m only 36!
My boys are 16 and 13.

Things have changed sooo much, even in that time,

Wishing you and your family all the best,

    G
    xx

    Wow!
I just googled fat baby 33 weeks and came across your page!
I just went to the doctor today, we had a sonogram yesterday.
Dr. says that my baby is measuring big. He body is measuring average 36 weeks and his little, I mean, BIG head is measuring at 38.
Dr. says I will probably have to have a c-section, which I really don’t want. I don’t know exactly how this happened because I have only gained 10 pounds total during my pregnancy.
Dr. says if i want to avoid having a c-section than I can watch what I am eating better and start walking!
Count me in! I was walking earlier on but then my leg cramps were getting so bad that all my walking would cause it to act up!
    I’m a first time mom.
Wanted to let you know you aren’t the only one with a big baby!

    Good luck!
