And the beat goes on…..

Oh the joys of home owning… especially a 90 year old house. Just as I thought we were about to put the finishing touches on our house….WHAM…..the sky falls in. Let me back up a bit. We knew when we bought the house we were going to put two major upgrades in. One of those was the plumbing, the other a heat pump. Galvanized, gunked up, old school plumbing was not ideal for us over the next 5-7 years that we plan on being here. We wanted to remodel the bathroom and kitchen too….ceramic tile, new tub, new counter tops…those kinds of things. We also wanted to choose when we invested in these upgrades.

Well you just have to laugh when your upstairs bathroom sink decides to spring a mammoth leak over your innocent kitchen below. The result…..well see for yourself as my brother came over to open up the ceiling to stop the leaking and then trace the plumbing to see what exactly we would have to do to update everything.

Oh sweet ceiling holes.

WE seemed to have sprung a leak in our supstairs bathroom

After spending 5 hours with my mom hand vacuuming and polishing the hardwood floors last week….now every square inch of my downstairs is covered in a fine powder of ceiling dust. I wanted to cry. As I sit here ready to go to my chiropractic appointment in two hours to correct all that I inflicted on myself from moving and cleaning just to see 50% of it undone. Oh man…patience, patience Kelly.

Unplanned disaster

Unplanned disaster

All this to say, God has a way of taking care of us. The day before this happened we booked three weddings. The Lord provided all the money before the sky fell down on us. It is going to be a major investment, but within the next 3-4 weeks we will have a beautiful new bathroom with ceramic tile floor, tub, linen closet, double sink vanity……Something REEEEEEEAAAAALLLL nice, Clark! (That is from Nat’l Lampoons Christmas Vacation…hilarious movie)

OH here is the kitchen color scheme and inspiration. I must stare at this picture and repeat to myself, “This will come together, this will come together, this will come together.” We are doing a nice funky contrast of red and sort of a pea green meets chartreuse in 2008 color like you see in the material and place mat. Go there in your brain…it will be delightful when it is finished and the cavernous holes in my wall and ceiling are all but a memory!

So let’s change the subject shall we? Let’s look at a finished room, one that is a place of peace and comfort. We finally have a nice big love den for Ryan and I. No more “scooting” around all our big furniture. Now we can do cartwheels and play Twister in our big boy/girl room and we have our own little half bath for extra privacy. So here is a looksee at the room where all the magic happens. OH SNAP!

Kelly-I’m so sorry about the leak, but at least you will have something REALLY nice when it is all finished. That is what I would have to keep telling myself. The kitchen looks huge and adorable from what I can see of it.

Great job on the bedroom. That looks like the same color as our bedroom, so I of course love it.

You are doing such a great job!

looking good! really, sometimes God forces our hand to be in His timing, huh?? :)

    Wow! What a shame!

I thought of the WEE thing too, but I’m prone to laugh at potty humor.

I have to say, though, God is good to have provided you the resources to fix it before it even happened! That color scheme is exactly what I have in my house. I’ve just got a tiny one - not the beaut you’ve moved into - so my whole downstairs is basically one big room: living, dining, kitchen, hallway, entryway. It makes it tough to try to make them distinct, but we have one of each of those colors in different areas and it seems to work. I just love that palate! Plus I probably told my husband 10 times now that I’d love to do a sort of robin’s egg blue/brown combo in our bedroom. Why am I not surprised to see you’ve got that going on? It’s weird, I tell you…

Congratulations on your beautiful new place, and rest assured that it’ll be even more beautiful once you’ve gotten through the renovation stage!

    All the best!

I love the new color scheme!

And if it makes you feel any better about the plumbing, I am sitting here listening to three plumbers tear out my bathroom, kitchen and laundry room walls. (And of course, they don’t repair walls. That will be another day, and until then I will be able to see the great outdoors through the holes. Hey, bugs! Come on in!)

    UGH UGH UGH.

Of course, we aren’t homeowners, so we aren’t paying for it, but TRUST ME, I AM PAYING FOR IT. ;)
p.s. - This is the longest comment I have ever left in the history of blogs.

Sorry about your house troubles, but Praise God for His provision!!
    Gorgeous bedroom!!

This isn’t covered by any new owner time frame? At least the tub didn’t end up in your kitchen or something. We had this happen in our main upstairs bathroom leaking into a lower bathroom/laundry room. My ceiling has not been fixed 5 months later. Ahem.

Your new bathroom will be awesome! They always look/feel so clean after remodeling.

  10. 10 Jennifer Jan 9th, 2008 at 4:47 pm

Just meant to add that we had a leak, not the tub down in our lower room as it kind of sounded. Sorry, got carried away!

OK…will you come decorate my house. I am decorating challenged and I just love all your colors, fabrics, blah blah blah! =)

Oh screw the ceiling holes. Your home is GORGEOUS and will have even more sugar topping with all your upgrades.
I love all your color choices! SO yummy, warm & inviting while being fresh & sassy. Wow. Didn’t know all that was poossible…. You go girl!

Oh, I know about leaking bathrooms. Thankfully ours just leaked into the garage. And thankfully my Dad had the skills to strip out the old one, and redo a new one for us. You’ll love it when it’s all done.

Kelly, surely you have the skills to monogramme your own pillowcases… oh, but you have a life. I don’t. Hmmm.

    Love your WEE bathroom!

OH, SNAP… snap, snap, snap. Those are quite the holes, my friend! SO thankful for you that you got those weddings booked. He always provides, doesn’t He? Everything looks so beautiful, Kel. Serene, sophisticated, and stylish are the words that come to mind. I miss those old Virginia Southern style homes. they have so much character and charm. I love those colors you’ve picked for the kitchen. Will you do an accent wall, or all the same?

  15. 15 Rachel Jan 9th, 2008 at 7:00 pm

Beautiful darling…Just beautiful…And as you say, everything happens for a reason..

  16. 16 Erin Jan 9th, 2008 at 10:32 pm

    Kelly,
Your house is gorgeous! I really like the colors and your style!
I am praying for you and your unexpected renovations!

Owning an old home is quite a different story altogether. Glad you booked the weddings. Do some deep breathing and pray to see a bigger picture here…

Your decorating style is such an inspiration! It all looks fantastic…unless you actually live in a shack and are just that excellent a photographer. J/K, dude, J/K. When I look at your place, I simply cannot wait to be a homeowner Love, love, love the new place, except for the holes in the ceiling, of course. Congratulations on a job well done, and I’m glad plenty of work came in to help with the unexpected expense.

Oh, you have my sympathy Kelly. We had to redo the plumbing in our house when we bought it. It was sketchy when we made the offer. The inspector had found a “problem area” in the downstairs bathroom but couldn’t confirm what it was unless he ripped out part of the wall. He said it could be just a leaky pipe or could be something major. We offered to take care of it while the previous owners were still living there so that we could avoid the situation you now find yourself in. Well, they turned it down because they didn’t want the disruption. Which I could completely understand but they decided to knock $500 off the selling price to cover the cost of the plumber in case it turned out to be nothing big. Well, when we finally moved in 3 months later, we had an awful, expensive mess to deal with.

The joys of buying an older home, eh?

By the way, I think you are trying to copy me Kelly. Using long-range binoculars or something? ;) Although you’ve never seen my house, we have a lot of the same colour rooms. My kitchen walls are the blue and the backsplash tiles are the same pea green as the place mat you are using as inspiration. *lol*

I love a wee bit o potty humor in the morning. I have to admit much jealousy - your house is looking great despite the holes in the ceiling. We moved in 3.5 years ago and still have boxes we’ve yet to unpack and only recently covered the holes in the ceiling

  21. 21 chrissy Jan 11th, 2008 at 4:25 pm

oooohho ho ho….my friend. that leak…..dear lord. i can only imagine how you felt. the thought that things were ‘getting there’ only to feel you’ve taken 10 steps back. but, you DO have to laugh. and God has shown Himself to keep His promises………..so this is no different. prayers….

and i LOVE your big girl/boy bedroom! niceeeeeeeeeeeee.

  22. 22 Amber Jan 13th, 2008 at 12:19 am

Awww Kelly!!! I am so sorry about the crazy kitchen mess!! And i thought our remodel was crazy!! It will all work out though…just breathe!!
The house is SUPER cute! I love the wainscoting in the bathroom and in the kitchen! So adorable!! A really charming house! Your decorating skills are amazing!! Keep the pictures coming of the home…you can never get tired of cute HGTV ideas!!
    Congrats on the new home!

  23. 23 Jude Jan 13th, 2008 at 6:37 pm

Think about it this way - you could have procrastinated for years and never quite been able to squeeze the money out of your budget - now you have to do it and it will be done by the time the baby is born! It’s all pluses as long as you don’t look up at the roof or down at the floor. Now - safety message - don’t you be cleaning up that dust in your ‘condition’ cause you don’t know what will be in it. Or at least get a really good quality dust mask. Your bedroom is just gorgeous - I love your bedroom furniture too.

Welcome back. your house is beeeutiful. I hope you get the mess sorted out soon.
