Don’t call me Porty

Call me Bennett Wade Portnoy! (or Ben for short).

Introducing our baby boy! And check out that package!

It's a boy! Is it ever...check out that turtle! Introducing Bennett Wade Portnoy

Yes, the neck and neck poll on gender now has a victor. BOY! I have to say, Ryan and I sat there completely shocked. I could not absorb it. I was so sure it was a girl and you all know I was leaning that way and Ryan really wanted a girl and was 100% sure we were having a girl…but nope….that my friends is a penis if I ever saw one!

The ultrasound was kinda frustrating because Bennett did not want to cooperate at all, a little shy about his face and bits and pieces…so we never really got to see his face. SAD. We go back in four weeks for face shots and more spine shots, they couldn’t see his whole spine. So I will be happy to see my little boy again and, of course, four weeks is huge in baby world, so he will have more chub and be bigger and easier to see. I am dying to see if he has the same Charlie Brown profile Chloe did with the pug nose.

I did have a short mini cry in the waiting room to release my shock. I’m human people! I am THRILLED for my extremely healthy little boy, what more could I ask for. All his organs are tip top, praise Jesus. I think a feeling of inadequacy swept over me as I just feel like I “get” girls, I am head over heels in love with Chloe and I just pictured myself with a house full of estrogen.

Now I know every mom out there with a little boy wants to tell me how great boys are…and they are….I just don’t shift gears that fast in my heart and head. I think I have gone from 5th to 4th gear…but I haven’t down shifted to 1st yet. Give me a day and I will be decorating his room in my head and finding cool toys and games for boys. Ryan can shift gears in a second and is so excited to have his third baseman. No pressure, right? YOU WILL BE AN ATHELETE AND YOU WILL LOVE BOSTON BENNETT!

We went out to Old Navy so I could revive my soul with a cute boy outfit. Shopping for boys? This is new!
This is Bennett’s first outfit, blanket and hat. Oh man..too cute!

Bennett's first outfit

So what’s with the name. Ryan and I bitterly fought about names for months. It came down to Anderson Wade (Anders) or Bennett Wade. I was pulling for Bennett. There is such a cool history. My great grandfather Bennett immigrated from Wales at the turn of the century. The trunk he brought over sits in my bedroom and on the side of the trunk he punched in the words, “Jesus Saves”. I love that there is a Christian heritage from way back. Bennett also means “Blessed” which is awesome. Wade is my dad and brother’s middle name and seeing as my bro decided not to use it, I wanted to carry that on. So there you have it. Cool heritage, cool meaning, family name. Bennett Wade. Very boy, very strong…I love it!

So here is what my belly looks like at one day shy of 20 weeks. I can’t believe I am half-way there!!!!!! So surreal!

Shirt on

19 weeks 6 days

Shirt up

19 weeks/6 days

9 lbs gained at the half-way point…yeah me!

One more picture for the road because I have calls and emails to make. If you don’t get Parent magazine, then you wouldn’t have seen the cover for September. I stopped dead when I looked at it because this little boy reminded me so much of Chloe. I said to Ryan, “If we had a boy, do you think he would look like this?” Ryan thought so. What do you think?

Could this be what Bennett looks like? Does this not look like Chloe?

I mean this is her this week.

She thinks it's hysterical go zoom around in this toy stroller

The eyes, the shape of the nose and mouth…I think it is pretty close. Wouldn’t that be wild? I love when siblings resemble each other…but who knows what we got cookin inside!

Alright kiddos, thanks for participating in the poll!

This is so exciting! And given that I, too, have a name with meaning, I really understand and respect your desire to give your son a heritage in his moniker! Congratulations on your healthy baby BOY!

  3. 3 Amanda Dec 13th, 2007 at 1:39 pm

    Yeah for Ben!!

  4. 4 chrissy Dec 13th, 2007 at 1:44 pm

i totally understand your emotions but i can assure you, you will be a wonderful mother to a boy. i mean, hello, kel, you love fart noises??!! who’s mom can laugh with them about bodily functions??? that picture kills me, too. i think i just got teary eyed. can’t wait to meet you, bennett wade!!!!!!!!

  5. 5 Katers Dec 13th, 2007 at 1:48 pm

YEAH!!! Congrats on the boy!! He’ll be so wonderful. I actually was closer to my brother than my sister growing up so I’m sure Bennett and Chloe will be great friends!! Congrats, also, Kelley for winning Ryan over to Bennett (it’s nuts though cause I was going to suggest Anders, too!!) Love ‘em both! :) :) Way to go!! I love it!! You’re right, very boy, very strong and with a name like that, he’ll probably be famous! :)

That little boy does look like Chloe in boy form. Oh Bennett will be so adorable!

  6. 6 Candace (aka Candy-ass!) Dec 13th, 2007 at 1:49 pm

Yipeeee!!! A boy! I have to say I’m pretty shocked too. I just knew it was a wee wee. But once little Benny :) gets here you won’t be able to imagine life any different. As for him looking like Chloe—it’s possible—I mean look how much you and Jamie look alike. Practically twins you two! :)

  7. 7 Kim Dec 13th, 2007 at 1:52 pm

Woot! I was right! I knew it was gonna be a boy, and I LOVE the name. Don’t worry, I felt the same way you did when I found out Dylan was a boy. Not that I didn’t want a boy but I was just so sure he was a girl and I knew what to do with a little girl, etc. It took me a few days to come out of my shock and adjust and then I was fine.

He is a true joy, totally different than Madison, and in my experience at least, he has been a little more work but that’s probably because she was such an easy baby. You will be a great mom to him just like you are to Chloe. Congrats!

  8. 8 Kate Dec 13th, 2007 at 2:05 pm

EX*CI*TING!!! Loving the unique names and what they represent. So happy that you and Ben are doing well.

  9. 9 christina Dec 13th, 2007 at 2:22 pm

Hooray for a healthy baby boy!! As a mother of a boy and girl who very m,uch fit the sterotypical genders, there is nothing cooler watching the two of them play together and how different but alike they can be. Cute belly too!

  10. 10 Rachel Dec 13th, 2007 at 2:28 pm

I know what you mean about “getting” girls–I feel that way too about my daughter–but I bet you will have a much easier time with a girl and a boy. Two girls so close in age would be in constant competition. They’d be only a grade apart in school, and they’d be fighting over friends, and believe me, it would be rough (my mom had four girls in six years, I know what I’m talking about). I think a boy and a girl will be better.

    And congratulations!!!!

  11. 11 amy Dec 13th, 2007 at 2:28 pm

woooohoooo Bennett!!! :) So excited for you!

  12. 12 Julie Nickerson Dec 13th, 2007 at 2:32 pm

YAY for Bennett!!! Abel will be thrilled! (We guessed boy, too) :)
I am so happy that he is healthy! I have always loved the name Ben. He will be ADORABLE and when he puts that outfit on, I will just want to scoop him up and squeeze him.

(And I have to second Chrissy. You will die laughing at his fart noises and his silly, crazy boy antics.)

    CONGRATS KELLY & RYAN!!!!

PS-yes that little boy could be yours!

  13. 13 christy Dec 13th, 2007 at 2:42 pm

You will LOVE having a boy. And I love Ben. It seems all the Ben’s I know, mine included are such sweet patient and gentle boys. Your Ben will be a perfect doll. I know it.
Caongratulations Kelly and Ryan…AND big sister Chloe. She is going to love her live new toy.:)

  14. 14 Holli Dec 13th, 2007 at 2:45 pm

Wooooooooooooooooooooooot!!!!! for Bennett, or Ben, as I have lovingly started to call him! Ryan will love having a little guy tagging along, I’m totally with ya on the whole “getting girls”, not really sure what to do with a boy, but I guess we’ll learn! Congratulations on a healthy baby boy report!

  15. 15 Hayley Morgan Dec 13th, 2007 at 2:47 pm

congrats, congrats, congrats! you know i will tell you, boys are AWESOME! (didn’t you predict moms of boys would sing their praises??) i know it will take some time to get used to the idea, and a girl is allowed to mourn the idea of what she thought would be. thats OKAY! :)

BUT, boys LOVE their mommas with devotion! and they are fun to dress up, too. there isn’t as great of a selection at the moderately priced places, and you’ll have to “piece together” more outfits rather than buying them as whole packages…but its fun!

okay, great. i’m so excited for you guys! and i LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the name. :)

  16. 16 Supermom Dec 13th, 2007 at 2:54 pm

Firstly congratulations on the little boy. I’m very very happy for you. About shifting gears - I totally get that. I was told that I was expecting a girl until a MONTH before my eldest was born. I cried so much that day. NOT because he is a boy but because I wouldn’t have a girl. I think it’s kinda difficult to explain so just know that I understand :) Love his name

  17. 17 Natalie Dec 13th, 2007 at 2:58 pm

Congrats on the little boy! My dad and little bro’s middle name is also Wade, which is a name I really like. Have fun picking out some fun boy stuff. I must say, I’m always jealous of all the adorable girl stuff and lack of boy stuff - but you will now have one of each. I can’t wait to start seeing pictures of their coordinating boy/girl outfits! Congrats again, and I too love the name. ~Nat

  18. 18 Rachel Dec 13th, 2007 at 2:59 pm

Congrats darling! How cute is that little boy outfit?! And you would definately be the perfect mommy to a little boy and miss Chloe…Good for you!

  19. 19 Amber Dec 13th, 2007 at 3:37 pm

YEAH!! Big Congrats on the new little boy!! So cool. Love the name too, very strong but also cool! Love the belly pics too.

  20. 20 Elizabeth Dec 13th, 2007 at 3:53 pm

Wohoo!!! I didn’t poll because I didn’t have a good guess but yay for a little boy. It’sso funny that you and I are opposites. I was convinced that Susannah was a boy until I saw her pop out and.. nope, that’s not a peepee! Anyhow, I am thrilled and I love the name and I think that Chloe will loooove having a little brother. Congratulations and enjoy buying those little boy clothes- so fun!

  21. 21 Amanda Brown Dec 13th, 2007 at 4:07 pm

I knew Porty had a wang. I just knew it.
I love the name, by the way! It goes so well with Chloe and I think it’s swell.
You, my dear, look fabulous with your tight little bump.
So excited for you to experience life with a boy!

  22. 22 Natalie P Dec 13th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

Congrats! I do agree with you on boy verses girl. I don’t know how anyone can think that girl stuff isn’t more fun and double the cuteness as boy stuff. I am 16 weeks monday and I have a dr’s appt. I will probably have to wait until my January appt to figure out what’s inside of me. And I am very happy that Ben is healthy. :)

    Natalie

  23. 23 Prue Dec 13th, 2007 at 4:24 pm

Congratulations on Ben - we have a Ben too! Great name! I didn’t think I would know much about boys and how to handle them, but you pick it up really quick - I know the names of SO MANY different types of trucks and construction equipment now!

  24. 24 O Mama Mia Dec 13th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

Wow, oh wow! I too was so totally picturing you with all things girly girl! But the fact that you have him named already shows your miles ahead of me & my game! I adore the name too! And hey! My great grandparents came over from Wales early 1900’s! Whoa!
Loving your adorable bump! So jealous! I’m all plump & jiggly. Ugh! And don’t you dare ask how much I’ve already gained! Just bring back the barf when I think about that.
    Go BLUE!

  25. 25 Donna Dec 13th, 2007 at 4:49 pm

    Yea! A boy! Woo hoo!

  26. 26 Kaili Dec 13th, 2007 at 4:52 pm

    Fun FUn FUN!
Your boy will totally look like the little man on the parent magazine, duh! SO friggin cute!
Congrats on having a boy on his way. I AM going on to tell you taht boys rock, and it’ll be so neat to have one of each, but I’m sure EVERYONE has told you that.
Woo Hoo! I LOVE the name Bennett and love the family history. Very cool!

  27. 27 Shawna Dec 13th, 2007 at 5:07 pm

  29. 29 Sarah Dec 13th, 2007 at 6:10 pm

    yay!
    loving the name.
anders is brett’s middle name so i loved that too…
    so excited for you!
i loved having a little brother so close in age growing up… i hope chloe will too : )

  30. 30 missie Dec 13th, 2007 at 6:44 pm

Woo Hoo! *LOVE* the name Bennett!!
And let me share… our third child was not planned by us. :) My husband was supposed to have a little snip-snip… but was in the military at the time, and they took their own sweet time and voila! :) I was CERTAIN we were having a girl (we already had a girl and boy) - had my heart set on it, I guess. When we had the ultra sound he (of course) was a boy… my very FIRST reaction was “Oh no. And my husband has already had his snip-snip!” Serisouly thought about having it reversed. (didn’t) But I will tell you, that I would not trade my Caleb for ANYTHING… he’s the sweetest, biggest blessing our family could have ever hoped for. God for sure knew what He was doing. :) Just wanted you to know I’ve been in your shoes. :)

  31. 31 sizzle Dec 13th, 2007 at 7:49 pm

    yay! a boy! (he’s a show-er not a grow-er maybe, heh.)

i was apprehensive when my sis gave birth to a boy. i was like, what do i know about boys!? i grew up with one sister. but you know what? they are totally fantastic little balls of boy energy and it is good. you’ll figure it out- besides, you have a husband who gets boys, right? ;)

  32. 32 Jamie Dec 13th, 2007 at 7:52 pm

yes I knew it! Congrats on your boy. I sort of lost it for a bit when I found out Levi was gonna be a dude. I was like *blink blink* but I only have girls…

    I guessed right:) Congrats!!!!

  35. 35 lynne Dec 14th, 2007 at 9:19 am

I always cry when I read your posts! The outfit is adorable : ) and Bennet Wade is totally the best name ever…I mean I want to steal it if we have a boy..I like it that much! If our boys don’t end up with Yankees names I will have to write a formal request for using the name Bennet! : ) Lot’s of Love to your family and your new little slugger!

  36. 36 Jessica Dec 14th, 2007 at 9:29 am

Congrats on your baby boy, Bennett!! I just found out this week that I am having baby boy #2! My son is around the same age as your daughter (born in Nov ‘06). You will love having a little boy…I am jealous you will have one of each! How perfect!!

And I love the name Bennett…it’s actually on our name list. :)

  37. 37 Julie Nickerson Dec 14th, 2007 at 10:26 am

I meant to say you look AMAZING! Way to go on only gaining 9lbs. By 20 weeks I had already gained 20lbs. I was a one lb per week girl, plus some since he came early. :)
You look adorable! I’m curious. Do you think you are carrying any different? People would stop me on the street or in the mall (I’m am so serious) and tell me I was having a boy because I had such a beach ball tummy. What do you think? I mean, they have a 50% chance of being right, but I’m just wondering if you feel different.

  38. 38 Karen Dec 14th, 2007 at 12:26 pm

Congratulations!… boy parts!… me too (having a boy, that is)! Welcome to the world of sports, superheros, cars/trucks/trains! :)

  39. 39 Amanda Franks Dec 14th, 2007 at 2:33 pm

Congrats! I hear ya on shifting slowly. I thought it would take me way longer to be okay with Girl #3, but it really only took a moment once she arrived. I’m still working on shifting gears though, getting excited about son-in-laws in 20 years instead of a brand new baby boy, but it’s okay because we all work in our own way on our own time, and you’ll get there at just the right moment! Congrats on Bennet, (I’m sure he’ll do the Sox proud :)).

  40. 40 Leiah Dec 14th, 2007 at 2:38 pm

Yea! I knew it was a boy! Love the name! What else can I exclaim about? :) Gear switching is hard, but I’m sure by the next post you will be completely gaga over having a son. Your belly looks great too, btw!

  41. 41 Kristine Weiss Dec 14th, 2007 at 4:07 pm

Yippee for a boy and I guessed right :) So far I’ve been right on with people!!! :) I think he is going to look like Ryan all the way.
BTW….I have less than 4 weeks to go till we meet Baby Maddie :) YEAH…

  42. 42 Sophie Dec 15th, 2007 at 9:17 am

    I knew it!
Congrats Kelly, you’ll be a great boy mommy too!

    Cute bump :)
    xxxx

  43. 43 Sarah Dec 15th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

I was saving Dan’s number in my phone today for wedding stuff… and I accidentally put in Dan Porty. And that was just funny.

  44. 44 Eli Dec 15th, 2007 at 2:47 pm

Love the name you’ve picked out! So masculine and strong. I know everyone says this but you will LOVE having a boy. I have one of each and love both of them dearly but my firstborn was a boy and there is just a bond that you cannot explain. I love him to death! He looks at me and says, “I just love you Mommy!” Needless to say, my heart melts.

    Congrats.

  45. 45 Angella Dec 15th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

    Hooray for Ben!

    You are blessed indeed!

  46. 46 Darcie Dec 15th, 2007 at 7:57 pm

    Oh my goodness, congratulations!

I was a bit disappointed when I found out I was having a boy instead of a girl. And I think that is ok. I think it is ok to give yourself a little time to mourn that you aren’t having the girl that you thought you were. I dont think anyone would judge that you will love this little guy any less if you take some time to sort through your conflicting emotions. And we all know what pregnancy does to your emotions! :)
I dont mind confessing this now because I love my son more than the depths of the oceans, more than there are words to express. And I know you will too.

  47. 47 Alison Dec 16th, 2007 at 1:28 am

hurray!! I am so happy for you! I wasn’t all that thrilled with the concept of having a boy (I ONLY wanted a girl) but oh my gosh… I LOVE my son! So take some time, get used to it, process it, and when he is here you are going to be amazing how sweet a little boy can be! And if he is anything like his older sister I know he will melt hearts!

    congrats!

  48. 48 Elizabeth Dec 16th, 2007 at 3:47 am

Take it from a girl with 6 big brothers. Boy are a RIOT!!! My mother still has hair, so you know it can’t be THAT bad. :) I hope all is well and that you’re slowly growing into the idea of projectile pee. BTW, I now have a blog of my own, it’s linked in my name now. Feel free to check it out, but only if you have time. Please, don’t pressure yourself, lol. :)

  49. 49 Erin Dec 16th, 2007 at 1:19 pm

I LOVE the name! Congrats Kel and Ryan!

  50. 50 Eileen Tully Dec 17th, 2007 at 11:56 am

Hooray for you!! I have to say, the way you felt finding out you’re having a boy will be the way I feel, if just for a second, if I have a girl. I’ve never been a girly girl, and I just don’t know what I’d do if I had one. Even the Pretty Princess dress up things they’re showing in commercials for Christmas scare me. To me, boys are just easier. And when my little man comes up and gives me a hug, I just melt. I’m sure you’ll love it!
By the way, I made a comment in an email earlier this week about the badonkadonk and hoped you knew that I was referring to myself as well. At just over 24 weeks, I’m definitely starting to spread! I mean it’s one thing to talk about your own derriere, but when someone else talks about it, it’s a whole other ballgame. Anyway, I just hope I didn’t offend. :)

  51. 51 Cara Dec 17th, 2007 at 4:14 pm

Congrats on a boy! I LOVE the name you’ve chosen. He’ll be here before you know it!

  52. 52 Kristin Dec 18th, 2007 at 11:44 pm

Chiming in late, here sorry! Congrats! I am so excited for you, love that you have the name all picked out and so think little Yalie just might be little Ben in 4 years!

  53. 53 Cristina Dec 19th, 2007 at 12:14 am

Congratulations! My five-month-old baby is a boy. I also wanted another girl but yes, I would not change my little prince for anything in the world. I also went to Old Navy after I found out the sex. I LOVE clothes for boys now!

  54. 54 Diane Dec 19th, 2007 at 9:53 am

Congratulations! Yeah, when I was pregnant everyone wanted me to have a girl. My parents even said they didn’t know what they’d do with a grandson. After he was born, my mom told me between sobs how they just couldn’t imagine life without that darling little BOY, and they hate to think how they were shocked they weren’t getting their granddaughter.

  55. 55 gorillabuns Jan 3rd, 2008 at 11:23 pm

  58. 58 Bobbi Aug 4th, 2008 at 9:48 pm

Today my boyfriend and I had an ultra sound at 36 weeks, and we too may have found out we are having a boy even though I wanted a girl so badly the first time around, and he was 100% sure we were having a girl. I cried like a baby… and it feels good to hear that another mom did as well. Thanks for sharing your story. I felt like such a horrible person for crying over something that shouldn’t matter, but it’s a hard piece of information to take in when you’re leaning so far the other way. Thanks again.
